Hey friend. If you’re a Houston or SE Texas mom (dad, you’re welcome too) sitting in the carpool line—or at the kitchen table at 9 p.m.—thinking *okay, we’re really doing this now what?*, pull up a chair. You’re exactly who Greater Houston Area Home Educators (G-HAH) is for.
Homeschooling around here can feel like trying to navigate the Beltway with a map that only shows Texas. Theres a co-op in one suburb, sports in another, a park day you heard about three friends later, and curriculum advice that somehow never quite matches *your* kids. G-HAH’s heart is simpler: **help Houston families homeschool with confidence**—through events, communications, and resource partnerships that serve brand-new families *and* the groups already out there doing the work.
This isn’t a lecture. It isn’t a sales pitch. And it’s definitely not “buy this one curriculum and your life will be peaceful. It’s a regional welcome, a little history so you know we’re rooted here, and a few next steps that fit real life between humidity, traffic, and Tuesday math.
Who G-HAH is (and why that matters locally)
[G-HAH](https://g-hah.org) is the **T.H.E. Regional Organization for S.E. Texas**—a grassroots home-education network for the Greater Houston area. We started in 1994 as a communications hub for Houston homeschoolers: connecting groups, sharing opportunities, and walking with new families who had more questions than answers (sound familiar?).
In 2014, G-HAH merged with the Southeast Texas Home School Association (SETHSA), which had been serving greater Houston since the early 1980s. That merge brought communications and service together so SE Texas families could have a fuller regional home—not instead of statewide help, but *alongside* it.
Our mission, in mom-speak: **make home education a little richer for Houston families**—events, communications, and resource partnerships that meet the needs of homeschool groups *and* the mom who just withdrew her kids last Thursday. We’re informational and welcoming. We point you toward opportunities in the Greater Houston community so *you* can choose what fits. Listings and connections are for your research—not a stamp that says every group is perfect for every family. You know your kids. We help you find the doors.
Homeschool with confidence does not mean “have it all figured out”
Confidence here looks like:
- Knowing you’re not the only family in Pearland, Katy, The Woodlands, Pasadena, Sugar Land, or the East Side staring at Tuesday’s math like it owes you money.
- – Having a place to ask “Is there a co-op near us?” without feeling silly.
- – Understanding that parent-directed education can look wildly different in every home—and that’s okay.
- – Finding encouragement that sounds like a Houston mom, not a glossy brochure.
You don’t need a perfect schedule before you belong. You need a clear first step and people who get the traffic, the humidity, the field-trip logistics, and the quiet joy of teaching your own.
A gentle first-week plan for Houston / SE Texas starters
Borrow what helps. Skip what doesn’t. No gold stars required.
**Day 1–2 — Orient locally.** Visit [g-hah.org](https://g-hah.org). Read the welcome and mission so you know who’s behind the site. Skim [About Us](https://www.g-hah.org/aboutus/) if you like knowing the backstory (we do—were curious like that).
**Day 3 — Peek at local resource language.** On [Local HS Resources](https://www.g-hah.org/resources/), G-HAH explains support groups, co-ops, classes, tutors, and stores in plain terms. You don’t have to join five things this week. Just learn the vocabulary so Facebook posts and park-day invites start making sense.
**Day 4 — Name your season.** Mid-year withdrawal? Kindergarten at home? One kid home while siblings stay in school? Write three sentences about *why this year*. That little clarity saves you from curriculum FOMO later (ask me how I know).
**Day 5 Choose one community touchpoint.** Like the [G-HAH Facebook page](https://www.facebook.com/GHAH.FB) or request to join the [Greater Houston Area Home Educators Facebook group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/GreaterHoustonAreaHomeEducators). Lurk first if you need to. Saying hello can wait until youre readywe’ve all been the quiet one in the corner.
**Weekend — One cozy win.** A read-aloud on the couch, a nature walk at a local park, a kitchen science mess that somehow involves every spoon you own. Celebrate that starting is already happening.
